EARLY VICTORIAN DOUBLE HEART & HAND FEDE RING

A charming double heart locket fede ring from 1847.

The ring has two glass lockets at the front to represent the double heart, this is held either side by finely modelled hands made of 15ct gold, one wears a diamond ring upon its finger.

The beautifully domed lockets hold plaited hair with a mixture of blonde and brunette locks creating a stunning abstract pattern.

The ring is inscribed on the reverse;

‘Alex Purvis, OB 4 Jan 1847, AEt 59’

Hands were used in Georgian and early Victorian jewellery as a romantic symbol.

The word fede comes from the Italian phrase ‘mani in fede’, meaning "hands in faith".

They were used to represent friendship, love, and betrothal.
