A super stylish 19th century niello gate bracelet.
The bracelet is a traditional gate design but with a supercool chequerboard design on each link, making it look really contemporary.
The bracelet closes securely with a tongue clasp which is engraved with ‘W.D’ on the reverse.
The clasps bears a hallmark of 900 for silver quality and a ‘V’ which is a continental hallmark possibly for Vienna circa 1880/90.
The chequerboard is in fantastic condition with only minor areas of wear to the niello design.
‘Niello’ is the term for the technique of melting a mixture of silver, copper, sulphur and lead to create a gunmetal/charcoal grey tone. This mixture is poured over silver which has been pre-scored, to create the desired pattern.
It was extremely popular with French and Russian jewellers in the 19th century.
