A fabulous early 19th century, French ‘Duchesse Anne’ ring with a crowned double heart.
The ring is made in silver, with two adjoined hearts - one silver and one gold.
The hearts are crowned with three bohemian rose cut garnets, with a further four garnets at the shoulders.
The band is reeded, and has a clear makers mark D.P, and a snail French hallmark which confirms silver.
Rings of this design were named à la Duchesse Anne, after a similar design was reportedly worn by Anne of Brittany for her marriage in 1490.
This type of ring is originally from Brittany in France and was popular from 1809-1819
Size approx: UK: P, US: 7 3/4
Examples of this type of ring can be found in the book ‘Traditional French Jewellery’ by Michael C.W Fieggen. He writes;
‘The Duchess Anne ring, almost always in silver, has two hearts shouldered by four garnets, and crowned by three other garnets. Depending on the ring, a single heart can be gilded or even both of them. According to Lionel Bonnemère, this ring is of Breton origin and was ‘a little worn in Normandy but only as far as Avranches’
