Georgian period
A gorgeous Georgian Ouroboros snake locket, with the original mini Ouroboros snake bail!
Circa 1810/1820, this stunning piece has crosshatch black enamel inlay around the entire snakes body.
Typically the snake has the end of his tail in his mouth.
The snakes eye is set with a green paste stone.
The snake borders a curved glass locket, that opens on the reverse! Perfect to add stones to make a shaker, or to add a keepsake.
The original black enamel snake bail is so rare to find still intact with the locket, and makes this piece so special.
The Ouroboros which means ‘tail devourer’ is a symbol of a snake eating its tail.
It dates back to ancient Egypt and Greece, and has several different meanings, representing infinity, the cyclical nature of life, and reinvention!
The Georgians and Victorians fell in love with this symbol, which became a popular motif in jewellery and has been en vogue ever since!
