A gorgeous Georgian pinchbeck quizzing glass designed as a coiled snake, circa 1820/30.
The body of the snake is entwined to make the handle and the lens’s frame. Finished with a chunky chased snakes head finial.
The snake is open mouthed biting a sphere, and the tip of his tail is coiled over his body.
A ‘quizzer’ was a useful accessory made of a single magnifying lens on a handle which was held up before the eye to enable closer scrutiny of the object in view.
They were extremely popular during the 18th and early 19th century with the fashion conscious crowd!
Now looks super cool as a pendant on a chain, and still works for magnifying on the go!
