Victorian period
A super rare Victorian silver walnut vinaigrette made by Sampson Mordan & Co.
Made of sterling silver; the Walnut is realistically modelled with fine detailing.
Hinged at the centre, the Walnut opens to reveal a silver gilt interior with an elaborately pierced grille which open and closes securely.
The makers name is engraved around the centre of the grille.
The Walnut is fully hallmarked in multiple places for London 1881 and bears the makers mark SM.
The silver lion passant on the bail, which guarantees that the silver is at least 92.5% pure, which is the sterling standard.
The piece is in fantastic condition
Sampson Mordan & Company was founded in 1815
They became known for developing the first mechanism for propelling pencils in 1822.
In 1836 the company started making a range of high quality vesta cases and vinaigrettes.
They were renowned for excellent design and great quality.
These pieces are now highly collectable
Vinaigrettes were popular from the late 18th century through the end of the 19th century. They were small containers used for holding various aromatic substances, usually dissolved in vinegar. A tiny piece of sponge, soaked in the vinegar, was contained beneath a grill or perforated cover, it was sniffed to cover up the unpleasant smells of the time!
