Victorian period
A really elegant Victorian Elephant Hair Bangle
The antique bracelet features a 14ct rolled gold band, and a strand of elephant hair joined by 14ct rolled gold crimp connectors.
Elephant hair jewellery became popular late in the 19th century.
It was bought as an exotic souvenir during the British Raj, when Western European adventurers started visiting India and would commission elephant hair jewellery as a souvenir of their safari experience.
The single strand of hair was taken from the elephants tail, and wrapped in gold.
Elephant hair jewellery is seen to prevent illness and harm, as well as bring love and luck.
This bracelet is extremely dainty when worn alone , and also looks fantastic as part of a wrist stack.
