This is a gorgeous Victorian elephant hair horseshoe pendant!
The thick single strand of hair is encased in a large scale 9ct gold horseshoe frame.
Elephant hair jewellery dates to around 1880/1890; usually in the form of rings, the jewellery pieces were often bought as souvenirs during the British Raj, when Western European adventurers started visiting India and would commission elephant hair jewellery as a souvenir of their safari experience.
The single strand of hair was taken from the elephants tail, and wrapped in gold.
The elephants were not hurt when a piece of hair was taken, it was as simple as a hair cut!
Elephant hair jewellery is seen to prevent illness and harm, as well as bring love and luck.
This piece is completely unique! It’s extremely rare to find in the shape of a horseshoe.
