The best pair of scarab beetle earrings I have found so far!
Circa 1860 these are Egyptian revival at its finest!
The earrings are made of three beautiful scarab beetles that graduate in size, with the smallest at the top, graduating to the largest at the bottom.
The beetles are set in a fancy 18ct gold frame that is open at the back, so you can see the full detail of the beetle, which is so fascinating.
The beetles have fabulous natural bright green luminescent shells, which are in great condition and match very well across the pair.
Likely made in France as the shepherds hook which are original bear the French hallmarks that confirm 18ct gold.
The earrings look excellent on, and are super light so they are very comfortable to wear.
The trend of wearing real bug jewellery became popular in the Victorian period.
People were fascinated with the new discoveries of foreign lands, exotic animals and bugs during this time.
As urbanisation grew, the Victorians become more detached from nature, so using bugs and animals as adornment was a way to bring them a little closer to nature again!
This is a little piece of history!
