Victorian period

A supersized Victorian Acorn pomander pendant.

This 9ct gold pendant is beautifully chased to show the detail and varying relief of the top of the acorn, with a smooth gold base.

The pendant twists open to reveal the cavity of the acorn!

Perfect to add a personal keepsake.

The base screws on securely to keep your treasure safe.

The stalk has been cleverly designed to be used as the bail.

The base is fully hallmarked for Birmingham 1901, which was the final year of the Victorian period.

It also bears the hallmark for 9ct gold, and a design registration number.

Originally pomanders were designed to hold a ball of aromatic spices or herbs, or a sponge drenched in perfume. The top has tiny pin holes to release the scent. Worn suspended from the neck or girdle or attached to the finger by a ring, it was believed to be a protection against infections and noxious smells.

The acorn was a popular symbol from the Victorian era into the 20th century.

They symbolised; Fertility, growth and strength.

From the tiny acorn, a mighty oak tree can grow.’
