A super weird but wonderful Bavarian hunting charm from the first half of the 19th century.
The pendant is made from the jaw of a small mammal (possibly a weasel or a pine marten).
The upper jaw of the animal has been set with a chunky silver scalloped mount and bail.
The traditional charms known as ‘charivari' were made in the alpine region of Bavaria in Germany.
The charms were made from hunting trophies, as a talisman for a successful hunt.
Traditionally worn as a group of charms on a chain or belt. These prized talismans were seen to bring good luck to the wearer.
They were carefully preserved and handed down through generations of families.
During 19th century, only the upper class were allowed to hunt, therefore these charms were also seen as an important status symbol among the gentlemen of high society.
The word ‘Charivari’ derives from the Latin word for madness, which really sums up these strange but super cool pendants.
