A gorgeous 19th century intricately engraved and enamelled coiled snake ring.
Circa 1840; The snake wraps around the finger multiple times, and has a lovely duck like shaped head, which was a typical design of the early snake jewellery.
The body has sections of foliate chasing and crosshatch enamelling in deep blue and black.
Floral enamel covers the snakes head and mouth in colours of black and green, similar to Swiss enamel designs of the early 19th century
The inside is inscribed with an italic text ‘C Cohn von H Pick’
This was likely a sentimental or commemorative piece given to the wearer to celebrate an occasion or a loved one.
Blue enamel was used as a symbol of loyalty and green was associated with renewal and eternal life.
The snake itself was a symbol of love and protection.
Looks wonderful worn.
