A very cool Spanish 19th century Damascene musket ball inlaid with high carat gold and silver.
Commemorating the ‘Bombardment of Bilbao’ in 1874; the musket ball has been historically converted into a model of flaming grenade, with a high carat gold ‘V’ for Victory frame, which also functions as the pendant bail.
The beautiful inlay work has a floral and fret work design in silver and gold, with the central inscription:
‘BOMBARDMENT OF BILBAO 1874 H.Y’
The siege of the Basque town of Bilbao began Feb 21st 1874. Carlist forces continued their bombardment until mid April when an incursion by the Liberal army under Serrano forced them to cease. The city refused to surrender and the siege was lifted on May 1st, and Bilbao was victorious.
A super cool piece of Spanish history that looks epic when worn.
