19TH CENTURY ELEPHANT HAIR & 18CT GOLD BANGLE

An elegant 19th century elephant hair bangle wrapped with 18ct gold!

This bangle has a single strand of hair wrapped in a fine strip of 18ct gold.

The bangle join is stamped with the French eagles head to guarantee 18ct gold.

It also has the French weevil import mark for imported gold and silver objects.

The bangle dates to around 1880/1890.

Elephant hair became a popular accessory during Victorian times and continued to be used in souvenir jewellery into the first half of the 20th century.

Elephant hair jewellery was seen to prevent illness and harm, as well as bring love and luck.

The bracelet can be worn alone but also looks fantastic stacked with multiple bangles.

Note, there is no fastening. So the bangle has to pass over your hand, so ideal for a small to medium size hand/wrist.
