A lovely early 19th century fob pendant with carnelian intaglio seal, circa 1800.
The carnelian intaglio reads in French
‘JE CHERCHE UN’ with a carved image of a cherub grasping a lit torch with a heart on the path.
It translates to ‘I AM LOOKING FOR ONE (HEART)’
It is a type of rebus puzzle, with the image of the heart completing the saying.
The fob case is closed back, and is adorned with scallop shells at each side. The stem is ornate with scrolls up to the bail.
The motto is so charming, and I’m sure we can all relate in one form or another!
