A stunning high carat gold early 19th century hand brooch, circa 1820.
The hand is holding a branch with enamelled pansy flowers and finely chased gold leaves.
The pansies have deep purple, white and yellow petals and red centres.
The hand is elegantly modelled, and has a wonderful stippled texture.
The Pansy symbol was extremely popular in antique jewellery because of the French word ‘Pensée’ which translated as both Pansy and thoughts.
‘Pensée a vous’ means ‘Thinking of you’ and ‘Pensée a moi’ ‘Think of me’, so it became the perfect motif for jewellery, and was often gifted to a loved one as a gesture of thoughtfulness and love.
The brooch has the original pin on the reverse that is in good working order, you can also thread through a chain to wear the piece as a pendant.
A totally unique and rare find
