VICTORIAN BISHOPS MITRE ROCK CRYSTAL LOCKET

A superb quality Victorian 18ct gold and crystal locket.

Believed to be made by renowned jeweller Robert Philips for Archbishop Alexander Ewing, the prominent Scottish Bishop of Argyll and the Isles. Who died precisely on the Acension day May 22, 1873.

This unusual locket has a reverse painted intaglio design on both the front and back.

The front has a gem encrusted bishops mitre and ribbon, with a scroll inscribed ‘Ascension Day 1873’ and the gothic letters ‘AE’

The reverse has a large purple cross’.

The edge of the locket and the original bail are made of 18ct gold, with black enamel, which is in excellent condition.

The locket opens smoothly and closes securely.

The crystal catches the light beautifully, which lights up the hand painted intricate design.

A rare piece of history.
